Do you have limited storage space available? If so, a storage carousel might be the answer.
A vertical storage carousel is a cleverly designed automated storage system that delivers stored goods to operators quickly and accurately. Compared to a static storage unit, it can easily double the storage space available in the same amount of floorspace. It does this by using overhead space that would otherwise be wasted.
Storage carousels are ergonomically designed. All goods are presented at workbench level, so there’s no more stretching, bending and lifting, or climbing onto stools and ladders to reach high shelves. This is beneficial from a health and safety perspective as it minimises the potential for employee injury.
The design of the interior of the storage space itself is flexible. Shelf options include plain trays; double shelves, which have two levels; and triple carriers, which have three – or whatever mix of those options is required. They are perfect for the storage of small parts and components, finished goods and more. Products are typically around the size of a shoebox, and that could be a complete item or a bin filled with small components or parts.
Storage carousels can be light or heavy duty, as required. The overall weight capacity can range from three to fourteen tonnes, and individual shelves can be loaded with anything from 125kg UDL (uniform distributed load) to 400kg UDL. This allows a great deal of flexibility and makes them useful to a wide range of businesses.
The unit operates electronically to rotate the shelves until the one requested is presented to the operator at work bench level. Should there be a power failure, there’s a manual override.
While all carousels come with a basic level of automation to allow the selected shelves to be located and presented to the operator, software can enhance the operation and also help you manage your stock.
The benefits of changing from standard racking for storage to an automated carousel unit are wide ranging, and include employee safety, speed and accuracy of access and retrieval, improved security, maximising the use of available space and better stock control.
